Fenerbahce Shock: Coach Ismail Kartal Resigns After Roma Draw
Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal resigned following a 1-1 home draw against Roma in the Champions League, ending his fourth stint at the Istanbul club.

Fenerbahce has been shaken as coach Ismail Kartal announced his resignation on Thursday evening, immediately following a 1-1 home draw against Roma in the opening match of the Champions League league phase.
The 65-year-old Kartal made the announcement during the post-match press conference, bringing an end to his fourth stint at the helm of the Istanbul club. "As of tonight, I would like to congratulate my players and announce my resignation from the position," he said before thanking the fans, management, players, staff, and media, while clarifying that he would not take any questions.
According to Kartal, the decision was made in consultation with his coaching staff. "I made this decision to clear the way for my club," he explained. "I resigned while there is still time, to help my beloved Fenerbahce, the players, and the coaches who will come after. I wish everyone a good evening, with the understanding that I will never return." Some players were left in shock by the announcement, including Archie Brown, who found out from a Turkish journalist.
Kartal returned to Fenerbahce last June for his fourth tenure, leading the team back to the main stage of the Champions League for the first time since the 2008/09 season after an 18-year absence. However, the domestic league start has been fairly mediocre, yielding 6 points from four matches and placing them ninth in the standings.
