Ethiopian Federal Army Advances on Tigray Capital as Rebels Retreat
Ethiopian federal forces advanced toward the Tigray capital of Mekelle as rebels evacuated, marking a major escalation following the collapse of the 2022 peace accord.

The Ethiopian federal army has made significant advances in the northern Tigray region, with armed rebels reportedly evacuating the regional capital of Mekelle as government forces approach. Witnesses and international news agencies confirmed that thousands of fighters and civilians were seen leaving the city, while federal troops captured the nearby Alula Aba Nega Airport.
Conflict Escalation in Tigray
The renewed fighting follows the breakdown of the 2022 Pretoria agreement that ended years of devastating civil war between federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). Tensions escalated earlier this year after the TPLF dismissed the local administration and boycotted national elections, subsequently forming a coalition with other insurgent groups, including the Oromo Liberation Army.
Regional Repercussions
The ongoing conflict continues to threaten regional stability, with Addis Ababa cutting diplomatic ties with neighboring Eritrea over alleged support for the insurgents.
While federal forces have reclaimed lost territory in both Tigray and the neighboring Afar region, humanitarian organizations warn of a deepening crisis. The previous years of warfare have resulted in severe casualties and widespread displacement, raising international concerns over stability in the Horn of Africa.
