DogeOS Launches Public Testnet to Bring Smart Contracts to Dogecoin
DogeOS has launched a public testnet introducing Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and ZK-rollups to Dogecoin, aiming to expand utility beyond basic payments.

Dogecoin is receiving a new technology layer today that could significantly expand its utility. DogeOS, an application layer project built on top of the Dogecoin network, launched a public testnet on September 30 enabling Ethereum-compatible smart contracts. Simply put, the move aims to transform DOGE from a coin primarily used for transfers and payments into an asset capable of hosting various applications and services.
The new system is based on ZK-rollup technology, a method for processing transactions off the main network and submitting proofs back to confirm proper execution. DogeOS is designed to support trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets, and gaming. Notably, network fees are paid in DOGE itself, eliminating the need for a new native token to interact with the infrastructure.
Current Limitations and Roadmap
However, the project is currently in a testnet phase rather than a fully production-ready network. As of the launch date, the native Dogecoin blockchain does not yet independently verify the ZK proofs of DogeOS. According to DogeOS CEO Jordan Jefferson, the system currently relies on a secure enclave for computation, validators, and a sequencer. A future upgrade to Dogecoin Core has been proposed to allow Dogecoin miners to directly verify the proofs, but the upgrade has not yet been implemented.
The project originates from the team behind the MyDoge wallet, which announced a $6.9 million funding round in May 2025 led by Polychain Capital. Two months later, the DogeOS team submitted a proposal to Dogecoin Core to enable native verification of ZK proofs on the main network. In the meantime, the public testnet serves primarily developers looking to build and test applications ahead of mainnet launch.
"We hope that DogeOS will become a springboard for a new wave of development and a gateway for more startups to build on Dogecoin," said Timothy Stebbing, a director at the Dogecoin Foundation.
Expanding the Developer Ecosystem
The potential highlighted by the project extends beyond smart contracts alone. Applications in trading, lending, stablecoins, and gaming are already being built around the testnet. According to DogeOS, the goal is to provide infrastructure allowing developers familiar with Ethereum tooling to build on Dogecoin as well, thereby expanding the developer and application ecosystem surrounding the coin.
The Dogecoin Foundation also views the initiative as an opportunity to expand network utility. Success will ultimately depend on the volume of developers and users migrating to the network, transaction activity, and a successful transition from testnet to mainnet.
At the time of launch, DOGE traded around 9.4 cents, following a decline of approximately 60% over the past year. Consequently, the launch of DogeOS does not inherently signal an immediate price turnaround. The core significance remains technological: for the first time, the Dogecoin environment gains an application layer tailored for trading, finance, gaming, and beyond.
