A debate erupted among Israeli educators after a teacher revealed that her school principal uses security cameras to monitor whether teachers are arriving late to classes. The incident, shared on social media, quickly went viral, igniting hundreds of comments that oscillated between outrage over an invasion of privacy and demands for professional accountability.

Privacy Invasion vs. Professional Discipline

Many teachers expressed fury over the practice, viewing it as a severe violation of trust and personal boundaries. "She might as well put a smart tag on every teacher's bag so she can track us on the way home too," wrote one educator sarcastically. Others cited Ministry of Education guidelines, arguing that using security systems for surveillance of teaching staff is strictly prohibited.

"At our school, the principal constantly spies on teachers. She checks who used the restroom last and left a mess, who left a glass cup in the hallway, and who skipped hall duty," shared another anonymous teacher.

Support for Administrative Oversight

Conversely, a significant portion of educators defended the principal's actions, pointing to persistent issues with staff punctuality. Supporters argued that teachers must set a proper personal example for students and that chronic lateness leaves classrooms unsupervised.

"If there is a persistent tardiness problem, the principal needs proof to deal with it. A teacher can be late, but a student cannot?" one commenter noted, emphasizing that conscientious educators who arrive on time have nothing to fear from the camera lens.

The Ministry of Education issued a statement clarifying that departmental regulations define school cameras strictly as tools to enhance safety, detect violence, bullying, and risk behaviors. For other administrative needs, school managements have dedicated tools at their disposal.
