Scientists used narwhals to study Arctic climate

Researchers have enlisted narwhals, known as "sea unicorns," to study the remote Arctic regions. By attaching satellite transmitters to six individuals, scientists gathered unique data on temperature and salinity in East Greenland's fjords, collecting in three years an amount of information equivalent to 130 years of observation.

Narwhals, known as the "unicorns of the sea" due to the long, spiral tusk adorning their heads, are mysterious creatures inhabiting the most remote areas of the Arctic. Recently, a group of these marine mammals took on a new role: climate researchers in the service of science.

The study focused on the fjord system of East Greenland — a region critical for understanding climate change, but one that is almost impossible to study by human means. Unpredictable ice, total darkness in winter, and the exorbitant costs of icebreaker ships left scientists with sparse data. To bridge this gap, researchers from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources recruited six narwhals, attached small satellite transmitters to them, and tracked them for three years.

130 years of research in three years

The result was unprecedented: in a relatively short period, the whales — capable of diving to a depth of about 1,800 meters and staying in frozen waters all year round — collected an amount of data on temperature and salinity that equaled everything human researchers had managed to collect in the last 130 years in this region. The data revealed a worrying phenomenon known as "Atlantification."

It turns out that relatively warm and salty water from the Atlantic Ocean penetrates hundreds of kilometers deep into the fjords. This water flows directly to the base of the glaciers, where it melts the ice from below — at the most sensitive point, invisible from the surface or by regular satellites. The findings indicate melting that is much faster than previously estimated, accelerating the mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet.

A global warning bell

This melting has consequences that go beyond the borders of the Arctic. The release of huge amounts of fresh water into the ocean could disrupt the critical ocean current system (AMOC), which is responsible for regulating the global climate. Scientists fear that the continuation of this trend could lead to a point of no return.

"This study is just a small piece of the big puzzle," the researchers conclude, "but it provides us with a rare look at a place where humanity simply cannot step, and where the future of the climate for all of us is determined."
