The Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that a four-month-old domestic puppy has tested positive for rabies in the Lower Galilee town of Deir Hanna. Following the confirmation, 17 individuals who came into contact with the animal were referred for preventive post-exposure treatment as the epidemiological investigation continues.

The infected animal is a medium-sized, black Cane Corso puppy that frequented the eastern neighborhood of the town. Health authorities urged anyone who interacted with the puppy or with stray animals in the area between October 15 and October 31, 2026, to urgently contact their local health bureau for risk assessment.

Rabies Risks and Prevention

Rabies is a viral disease targeting the central nervous system, transmitted primarily through bites, scratches, or contact between infected saliva and broken skin or mucous membranes. According to the World Health Organization, the disease is almost invariably fatal once clinical symptoms manifest, making immediate post-exposure prophylaxis critical.

Authorities advise anyone who suffers a bite or scratch from a potentially infected animal to immediately wash the affected area with running water and soap for approximately 15 minutes, apply an antiseptic such as 70% alcohol or iodine solution, and seek urgent medical evaluation.
