An American citizen who fell ill was evacuated from a research station on the frozen continent in an extraordinary operation and was safely transferred for medical care in New Zealand. An American citizen was evacuated last week in a daring medical mission from Antarctica, at a time when the continent was in almost total darkness and temperatures reached around minus 40 degrees Celsius. This was reported on Friday by CNN. The evacuation was carried out by an Australian aviation team from the company Skytraders, which specializes in flights to the frozen continent.
Antarctica is the southernmost continent on Earth, covering an area of about 14 million square kilometers. Most of it is covered by a thick layer of ice, making it the coldest continent in the world. There are no permanent residents there, except for scientists at research stations.
According to the report, on July 28, the Australian airline received an "urgent request for assistance" for a medical evacuation from the American research station "McMurdo". The team's departure was initially delayed due to particularly severe weather conditions, and it was only three days later that the team arrived at the station after a five-hour flight. According to airline staff, the plane landed "in particularly challenging conditions," in almost total darkness at a temperature of minus 43 degrees Celsius. Skytraders stated that after the patient was transferred to the plane, the expedition left the continent "before conditions worsened."
The patient was flown to the city of Christchurch in New Zealand, where he received treatment. The company declined to provide details about the patient's identity or medical condition, but noted that he is "recovering well."
"Every Antarctic mission requires absolute precision, but operations in winter increase the complexity significantly. The conditions we encountered were really at the limit of the capability even of the most special aircraft," said Captain Al Wallach, the flight commander.
Second pilot Louise Robertson added in a conversation with CNN that "most of the runways are just compacted snow, which means there are people who prepare the runway to make sure there is enough friction for the plane to be able to stop, and also that the surface is smooth and clean." Before the mission, the team prepared for several worst-case scenarios, such as a power outage on the runway that would have forced them to land with zero visibility. Additionally, the plane carried extra fuel in case it could not land and was forced to return to Australia.
"It was a huge amount of concentration, workload, and a lot of calculations. Once we started approaching New Zealand, there was real relief," Robertson concluded.
