Court Extends Detention of Drunk Driver Who Killed Triathlete Tal Gilboa
A 20-year-old driver was remanded in custody for three days after allegedly hitting and killing 47-year-old triathlete Tal Gilboa on Route 98 while driving under the influence.
Court Extends Detention of Driver in Fatal Golan Crash
The Magistrate's Court in Nof HaGalil extended the detention by three days on Saturday of a 20-year-old resident of the Golan Heights region, who is suspected of running over and killing 47-year-old Tal Gilboa while he was riding his bicycle on Route 98 near the Magsimim Junction.
According to the Israel Police, the young driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. "Following an initial investigation and field treatment by traffic police officers, suspicion arose that the private vehicle driver was under the influence of alcohol," police stated. "A test administered to him indeed found a positive indication of alcohol in his body."
"A black morning. A morning that cuts short a whole life, with so many plans, dreams, and moments that were still supposed to happen. Tal, you were my trainee for many years, but long ago you were much beyond that. A good friend, the salt of the earth," wrote his coach, Dan Alterman.
Gilboa, a resident of Kibbutz Kfar Haruv in the southern Golan, was an accomplished triathlete who had previously competed in the Ironman triathlon. He leaves behind his wife Galit, children, and a devastated community of friends and athletes.
