How to set an impressive Shabbat table: tips for design, good atmosphere, and family experience

We are so busy during the week, running from place to place and feeling that there is no quiet, even for a single moment. Add to that the new start for the children in school, holidays arriving soon, and you have a sure recipe for a busy week. More than anything, we need a moment to stop. How wonderful that Shabbat is arriving!

For me, the Shabbat table is a sign of relaxation. The house fills with light, the smell of good food, and family conversation. The Shabbat table has great power to connect the members of the household, to create a sense of holiness and warmth, and to bring special beauty into the home.

Whether it is the first Shabbat you will observe, or you have been observing Shabbat for years - setting a Shabbat table is a way to mark that Shabbat is important to you. You are preparing a place of honor for it. A table set with elegance in honor of Shabbat signals us to slow down, as if it says: it is possible to relax, take a breath.

A light tablecloth - the basis for a festive atmosphere

The tablecloth is the basis for the entire design. A classic white tablecloth immediately creates a festive feeling, but also a tablecloth in delicate shades like cream, beige, or sage green can add special warmth.

To add interest, it is possible to place a narrow runner along the table, made of linen fabric, lace, or natural fabric in a warm shade.

Beautiful napkins - it is worth investing!

Cloth napkins jump-start the look of the table in a moment. True, you need to wash them and they are not thrown into the trash at the end of use, but precisely because of this they become a respectable and luxurious item.

What is good about cloth napkins is the beautiful volume they bring with them. It is enough to insert them inside a napkin ring, and without any special folding they add beauty to the table.

Beautiful serving dishes

If you have not yet purchased special dishes for Shabbat - this is the time. Add to the shopping list a new and beautiful set of plates in honor of the holy Shabbat. It is worth investing in Shabbat. By the way, it is not at all necessary to have white or light plates; colorful plates, if you like them, can also integrate wonderfully into your Shabbat table.

What else can (and should!) be added when setting the table?

Challah tray: A special tray to place the challot on. You can go for the traditional one made of metal, or diversify with a wooden butcher block or a glass tray - go with the style you like.
Challah cover: Today there is no end to the possibilities. There are challah covers made of cotton, velvet, or faux leather. There are those embroidered with lace and there are plain ones. Do you have children?

Turn setting the table into part of the family experience. Let them choose flowers, arrange napkins, and prepare a small card with a name for each diner, even if it is "only" father, mother, and the siblings.

In the end, what is the most beautiful thing around the Shabbat table? The people around it. This is exactly the meaning of Shabbat: to stop for a moment the race of the week, to sit together and enjoy the beauty that Shabbat has to offer, both in the physical and in the spiritual.
