The controversy surrounding Coco Gauff has reached the United Nations, as the UN Human Rights Office issued a strong statement condemning the racist attacks targeting the 22-year-old American tennis star on social media during the Beijing tournament.

UN Condemnation and Social Media Backlash

Gauff, ranked fourth in the world and a two-time Grand Slam champion, found herself at the center of a storm following a disputed point in her match against Chinese player Sun Xinyan, which led to a flood of abusive messages and accusations of cheating.

The racist messages directed at Coco Gauff are appalling and illustrate how Black female athletes are increasingly targeted with verbal attacks and racist hatred, stated the UN Human Rights Office.

The incident began on Monday when Gauff raised her hand to stop play due to flashing electronic billboards. The umpire ordered a replay, and Gauff ultimately won the match 7:5, 6:1, sparking outrage among some fans.

Gauff's Response and Subsequent Elimination

Gauff fired back on social media platform X, emphasizing that dislike should not cross into racism. Two days later, she was eliminated in the round of 16 after a 6:3, 6:3 defeat to Belgian player Elise Mertens, admitting the ordeal had taken a severe toll on her energy and focus.
