Chaos in Southern Israel: Assassination Attempt and Gunfire at Police
An extraordinary incident in the south: in front of a police patrol, a passenger exited a vehicle and opened fire on another car after blocking its path. Immediately afterward, the assailant opened fire on the responding officers.
Patrol officers from two police cars moving through Tel Sheva noticed a vehicle stop suddenly at an intersection, blocking the path of another car. A passenger from the first vehicle exited with an M16 rifle and opened fire on the car stopped behind him. One passenger was hit in the head, and the driver shifted into reverse, attempting to escape the line of fire.
At that moment, the shooter noticed the police cars and opened fire on them as well. The officers exited their vehicles to return fire and attempt to arrest the shooter, 22-year-old Anas Al-Ataika from Rahat. Al-Ataika fired several rounds at the officers, who were taking cover behind their patrol car doors, and at their tires, before entering a car driven by his accomplice, 25-year-old Muhammad Abu Sidra, also from Rahat. The two fled the scene at high speed. The officers attempted to pursue them, but due to a flat tire caused by the gunfire, they were forced to stop after 200 meters.
Al-Ataika and Abu Sidra returned to their city. The officers returned to their station with only a description of the vehicle, which was entered into the investigation file.
Details of the incident became a topic of discussion among police in the Negev and Rotem districts. When a woman in her thirties called to report her car stolen, an investigator suspected it might be the vehicle they were seeking. The car was located at a garage, where workers were repairing damage sustained during the shootout. A wiretap revealed that the woman, identified as 29-year-old Anour Al-Ataika from Rahat, was discussing the repairs. Investigators then began making arrests.
Abu Sidra and Anas Al-Ataika were arrested first, followed by Anour Al-Ataika a week and a half later. While in a detention cell, Al-Ataika confessed to an undercover police informant, unaware of the man's role, and detailed the incident and his accomplices. This information strengthened the case, which already included security camera footage, DNA evidence, and other findings.
Attorney Orly Pitusi of the Southern District Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against the three in the Beersheba District Court. They are charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, weapons offenses, filing a false police report, and obstruction of justice. The prosecution has requested that the defendants remain in custody due to the risk of obstruction of justice and flight.
