Canadian Tourist Visiting Jerusalem Receives 'Welcome to Palestine' Text
A Canadian tourist visiting Jerusalem's Yad Vashem memorial received an automated roaming text from Bell Canada welcoming him to 'Palestine', sparking widespread outrage.

A Canadian tourist visiting Jerusalem received a roaming text message welcoming him to "Palestine" while touring the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, according to a report published by the National Post.
The tourist, an Ottawa resident who asked to be identified only as Charles due to safety concerns amid rising antisemitism, arrived in Israel last week. While standing at the Jerusalem memorial, his mobile phone received an automated welcome message from Bell Canada detailing roaming rates and greeting him with the phrase "Welcome to Palestine."
Charles expressed deep dismay over the timing, noting the distressing juxtaposition of receiving a message that effectively erased Israel while visiting a site commemorating the Nazi genocide of the European Jewish people. He described feeling nauseated by the incident, viewing it as part of a broader, coordinated effort to deny Israel's existence.
In response to the inquiry, Bell Canada explained that roaming notifications are triggered automatically when a device connects to a nearby cellular network antenna. The company stated that geographic proximity between networks often leads to overlapping signals, causing travelers in Israel to occasionally receive messages designated for the Palestinian territories.
Furthermore, the Canadian telecommunications provider emphasized that its automated roaming system relies on an independent third-party global database. According to the company, location names are pulled directly from international industry registries without any direct editorial control over the phrasing by Bell Canada itself.
