Two California Police Officers Injured After Exploding Car Erupts in Flames
Two California Highway Patrol officers sustained burns after a disabled Toyota Camry exploded on an interstate in Moreno Valley. The driver was arrested for suspected DUI.
Two California Highway Patrol officers sustained moderate injuries after a stationary vehicle suddenly exploded and burst into flames during a traffic stop on a Southern California interstate.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, around 3:00 PM, on Interstate 215 in Moreno Valley, a city located in Riverside County approximately 100 kilometers east of Los Angeles.
According to local reports, a 2007 Toyota Camry broke down in the middle of active traffic lanes due to a mechanical failure. The driver, suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, and his passenger managed to push the vehicle to the right shoulder of the highway just as patrol units arrived to provide assistance.
Sudden Fireball on the Interstate
While the two officers were standing near the empty vehicle speaking with the driver, a massive explosion erupted. "Within seconds, a sudden explosion occurred, and the officers were trapped inside flames," recounted investigator Javier Navarro at the scene.
County fire crews arrived within minutes, quickly extinguishing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby brush. Both officers were transported to the Riverside University Health Center. Police spokespersons stated that they suffered mild to moderate burns and are expected to make a full recovery.
The driver and passenger were uninjured in the incident. However, the driver was arrested at the scene and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). The passenger was released without charges as fire and police authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the sudden explosion.
