Caleb Flinn, a former American Idol contestant, was convicted of murdering his wife, Ashley Flinn. According to the prosecution, the 40-year-old Flinn shot her twice in the back of the head while she was sleeping at their home in Ohio on February 16, and then attempted to claim that intruders shot her. Flinn reportedly intended to murder his wife so he could live with his 24-year-old mistress, Aliyah Buttner, whom he met in his capacity as a pastor.

Trial and Evidence

Flinn wept in court as the jury read its verdict following less than three hours of deliberations. He was also convicted of eight additional charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence, and faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

I was up until 4 AM yesterday crying, genuinely thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail, Flinn wrote in August 2025 to Buttner, the woman with whom he was having an affair. In another message he wrote: I just want her to die and disappear.

The Defense and Background

Buttner, who met Flinn when she worked as an intern at his church, testified during the trial for two days about their nearly 18-month relationship. During her testimony, she stated that she now hates Flinn because she believes he murdered his wife. Prosecutor Paul Watkins relied on Flinn's correspondence, which he said demonstrated his hatred for his wife, noting that Flinn feared losing custody of his daughters, his job at his wife's family business, and his position at the church.

Flinn appeared in 2013 on the 12th season of American Idol before judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Randy Jackson, receiving a golden ticket to Hollywood but failing to reach the main competition. His sentencing is scheduled for October 5.
