Good news for drivers: Begin Highway reopens to traffic
The Begin Highway southbound has opened to traffic following the successful completion of construction works. Authorities aim to accelerate progress to open the northbound section during the holiday period.
Starting early Friday morning, the Begin Highway southbound was opened to traffic — 5 hours ahead of schedule. This follows the successful completion of works to install three additional steel bridges along the route.
The project is being carried out by the Ministry of Transport, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Transportation for Jerusalem company, and the Moriah Jerusalem Development Corporation. The new bridges will serve as part of a bicycle path included in the Begin Highway upgrade project, which also features a dedicated public transport lane between the Givat Shaul and Golda Meir interchanges.
To facilitate the installation, the Begin Highway southbound was closed overnight from the Yigal Yadin interchange to the Givat Shaul interchange. Although the road was scheduled to reopen at 10:00, rapid progress allowed for traffic to resume in the early morning hours, several hours ahead of the set timeline.
Officials from the Ministry of Transport, the Jerusalem Municipality, and the project partners noted that this marks a significant milestone. The project is being executed on an accelerated schedule with the goal of completing the northbound section during the upcoming holiday period.
The Begin Highway upgrade includes road widening, the establishment of a public transport lane, and the development of advanced infrastructure for all road users, including drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Upon completion, the project is expected to improve traffic flow, increase road capacity, and strengthen Jerusalem's public transport system.
