Thirty Years On: Eyal Berkovic's Historic Masterclass Against Manchester United
Thirty years ago, Eyal Berkovic starred in Southampton's historic 6-3 thrashing of Manchester United, scoring twice and assisting in a legendary Premier League masterclass.

Thirty years ago, on October 26, 1996, Eyal Berkovic delivered one of the most memorable performances by an Israeli footballer in the Premier League, leading Southampton to a stunning 6-3 victory over Alex Ferguson's Manchester United at The Dell.
The Red Devils arrived at Southampton reeling from a 5-0 defeat against Newcastle just six days earlier, finding themselves conceding 11 goals in two league matches. For Ferguson, it was a double humiliation, but for Berkovic, it was a stage to showcase his extraordinary talent to English football.
A Masterclass on the Pitch
Inside the opening six minutes, Berkovic made his mark. A brilliant backheel pass to Egil Østenstad left the Norwegian face-to-face with Peter Schmeichel. Although the Danish goalkeeper blocked the initial shot, Berkovic was perfectly positioned to fire the rebound into the back of the net.
In the 35th minute, Berkovic set up Matt Le Tissier, who fooled Brian McClair before artfully chipping over Schmeichel. After United attempted a comeback with ten men, Berkovic sealed the rout in the 83rd minute with a thunderous volley into the top corner, before Østenstad completed the scoring.
Praise poured in from all corners, most notably from Southampton manager Graeme Souness. Speaking to the press, the Liverpool legend confessed: "I haven't seen anyone like that for a very long time. I used to pass the ball myself, but never at that level."
Reflecting on his stellar display and his brace, Berkovic remarked: "The ball just fell from the sky. It is definitely one of the finest goals I have ever scored." Three decades later, the 6-3 demolition remains etched in history as the night English football truly discovered the magic of Eyal Berkovic.
