Belgian BASE Jumper Rescued After Tangling in Auckland Skyscraper Facade
A 22-year-old Belgian BASE jumper was rescued in Auckland after his parachute tangled in a 23-story hotel facade. He faces criminal charges and property damage costs.

A 22-year-old BASE jumper from Belgium experienced a terrifying ordeal in New Zealand when his parachute became entangled in the facade of a 23-story luxury hotel in Auckland. The incident, which occurred late at night on October 20, prompted a dramatic rescue operation involving specialized high-angle emergency teams.
The skydiver, identified as Ilias Nait El Cadi, leaped from the roof of the Indigo Hotel just before 11:00 PM. According to local media reports, the jump quickly went awry as the canopy malfunctioned and twisted, sending him crashing into the building's exterior where he became snagged on a metal rod high above the street.
Firefighters deployed a specialized high-altitude rescue unit to the scene, reaching the stranded tourist through a window on the 23rd floor. Rescuers had to smash an exterior glass panel valued at approximately $11,200 to pull him safely inside the building. Miraculously, the young man sustained no injuries and required no medical attention.
Despite apologizing to hotel guests and emergency crews after his rescue, El Cadi's legal troubles quickly escalated. On Tuesday, October 27, he appeared in an Auckland court facing two counts of unlawful building intrusion, relating to the hotel incident and unauthorized access to another skyscraper in the city. Local authorities suspect he was also involved in a previous BASE jump from a 187-meter tower. He has yet to enter a plea and was released on bail.
