Beitar Jerusalem Edges Hapoel Petah Tikva 1-0 Amid Off-Field Controversy
Beitar Jerusalem defeated Hapoel Petah Tikva 1-0 for their fifth straight win, but the victory was marred by captain Yarden Shua's offensive gesture and fears of a points deduction over a fan brawl.

Beitar Jerusalem secured a 1-0 victory over Hapoel Petah Tikva, extending their impressive run to 16 points out of the last 18 available and notching their fifth consecutive win. However, post-match discussions were overshadowed by off-the-field controversies, notably a humiliating gesture by Beitar captain Yarden Shua toward Alex Muhonda and concerns over a pre-match fan brawl.
During an argument on the pitch, Shua made a gesture implying a foul odor toward Muhonda. The incident infuriated Muhonda's teammate, Eric Bille, who confronted Shua and accused him of racist behavior. "He wasn't even involved in the incident, he came over and started spitting," Shua explained after the match. "I said he had a bad breath, that's all. When someone spits near your nose, it's unpleasant. People are making a big deal out of it just because Yarden Shua is a big name."
Beitar coach Almog Cohen addressed the situation, stating that the club will review the matter internally as management does not intend to let the captain's behavior slide. Shua is expected to face a disciplinary conversation and may issue a formal apology to Muhonda. Additionally, the club is bracing for potential sanctions from the Israel Football Association disciplinary tribunal following a violent clash between supporters of both teams prior to kickoff, with fears of a one-to-two-point deduction.
On the tactical front, despite the victory, Beitar acknowledged a subpar performance, particularly in the second half. Colombian player Alexis Serna earned praise for a solid display, while the club expressed disappointment in Shon Weissman's lackluster return to the starting lineup. Omer Atzili also had a quiet match, aside from winning the decisive penalty. Coach Cohen praised the team's defensive improvement, noting that after conceding seven goals in the opening two rounds, Beitar has allowed only two goals in the subsequent six matches.
