Police in the Negev are investigating an extortion and threats case involving four suspects. The Beersheba Magistrates' Court extended the detention of the four suspects on Tuesday, following police requests, for periods of seven days and two days.

The incidents began in mid-September when a commercial building used by a business owner in the Beersheba industrial zone was torched by unidentified individuals who fled the scene. Early this week, three young men from the Bedouin diaspora were arrested on suspicion of throwing a grenade at the businessman's home.

Connections Between Extortion and Arson

During the investigation of the three suspects, links emerged between the grenade attack and the arson incident at the commercial building last month. Another young resident of the diaspora was arrested on suspicion of involvement. During his remand hearing last week, Judge Asif Gil partially approved the police request to extend his detention.

"Based on the suspicion, the suspect was involved in torching a building in the Beersheba industrial zone and in extortion under threats against a person connected to the location," the judge stated.

Court Proceedings and Evidence

The suspect was brought back to court on Tuesday after being questioned by the Negev Central Unit. Police representatives emphasized the connection between the threats, the arson, and the grenade attack, which was apparently carried out after the business owner refused to pay protection fees.

Defense attorneys questioned police regarding the nature of the extortion messages and whether any payments were made. The investigator confirmed there was no indication of payment and noted that suspicions regarding the arson had not strengthened during subsequent questioning. The court ultimately extended the detention of all suspects by seven days as investigations continue.
