Prominent Israeli media personality and Keshet 12 host Avri Gilad has surprised viewers and his co-host Yair Sharki by enrolling in truck driving lessons to support the IDF reserves during national emergencies. During a live broadcast, Gilad revealed his unexpected new pursuit, explaining that despite lacking a combat background, he wanted to find a tangible way to contribute during wartime.

"You know what I did today? I registered for truck driving lessons," Gilad shared, prompting a humorous quip from Sharki about building a fallback career against artificial intelligence. Gilad explained that his decision stemmed from a pressing concern over potential driver shortages during crises. "I asked myself how I could contribute in the reserves. I am not combat personnel, I am nothing. If there is a war, what is needed? I heard people asking who would drive if Arab drivers stopped working, so I decided to learn to drive a truck myself."

Celebrities Behind the Wheel

While Gilad has only just begun his training, obtaining a heavy vehicle license is not entirely unprecedented among Israeli public figures and entertainers. Over the years, several well-known personalities have acquired truck licenses for various personal and civic reasons.

Prominent actor and comedian Tzvika Hadar has held a heavy vehicle license for many years. His qualification took on special significance in the early days of the Iron Swords war in October 2023, when Hadar volunteered to drive trucks loaded with equipment and water to soldiers and residents near the Gaza border.

Other notable figures include popular singer Moshe Peretz, who passed his practical truck driving test to operate large vehicles, and football coach Barak Bakka, who obtained his truck license as a youth in his moshav. Additionally, legendary singer and producer the late Benny Amdursky worked as a professional truck driver in Jerusalem before launching his illustrious musical career.
