Alarming statistics: Surge in road fatalities across Israel
A new report from the "Or Yarok" association reveals that the current summer months are on track to be among the most catastrophic in the last decade, with dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries in major urban centers.
Data from the "Or Yarok" association points to a dire reality on Israel's roads. By the end of August 2026, 105 people had already been killed in traffic accidents. The association warns that this summer is among the deadliest in the last decade and calls for an immediate shift in road safety policy.
For comparison, in the summer of 2025 (June to August), 117 people were killed in traffic accidents, marking the deadliest summer of the decade. During that period, 702 people were seriously injured, and the total number of casualties reached 3,454.
Urban areas are a particular point of concern. In the summer of 2025, 45 people were killed on urban roads, a 25% increase compared to the 36 fatalities recorded in the summer of 2024. "Or Yarok" emphasizes that during summer months, children and teenagers spend more time in public spaces, necessitating special safety preparations by local authorities.

Yaniv Yaakov, CEO of "Or Yarok," has sharply criticized government policy, claiming that current efforts are insufficient to curb the rise in fatalities. He advocates for more significant state involvement alongside proactive measures by local authorities rather than waiting for central guidelines.
The association calls on the Ministry of Transport to prioritize infrastructure improvements on major traffic arteries, especially ahead of the holiday season. Furthermore, it demands that the Israel Police increase their presence and enforcement in entertainment zones and urban areas.
Beyond state action, "Or Yarok" reminds drivers of their personal responsibility: checking tire pressure, ensuring vehicle roadworthiness, avoiding driving while fatigued, and strictly refraining from mobile phone use while behind the wheel. Increased vigilance toward pedestrians and children is also essential.
"Beyond the dry data, these are human lives and families forced to deal with loss," the association stated, calling for a combination of increased awareness, stricter enforcement, and infrastructure investment to halt the carnage on the roads.
