An Australian tourist was deported from Bali and banned from Indonesia for ten years after security footage of him engaging in a sexual act on private property went viral.
A 27-year-old Australian tourist was deported from Bali and banned from entering Indonesia for a decade after being filmed engaging in a sexual act on private property in Kuta. Authorities detained him just before he boarded a flight back to his home country after CCTV footage went viral on social media and sparked local outrage.
Billy Aspinall arrived in Indonesia for a four-day trip to attend a friend's wedding. During his vacation, he met a woman at a local beach club and stated during his interrogation that he did not know her name or nationality. The two were captured on security cameras entering the driveway of a private home in north Kuta and engaging in sexual activity for about fifteen minutes.
One of the residents who encountered them while heading out for prayer shouted at them and demanded they stop. The footage leaked to social media, went viral, and reached local police, who launched an investigation. Following the video's distribution and the resulting anger, local residents performed a Hindu-Balinese purification ritual outside the house to cleanse the area of negative energy.
Police identified Aspinall, and immigration authorities entered his details into border control systems. On August 25, he was intercepted at passport control at the airport while heading for a flight back to Brisbane and detained for questioning. The property owner chose not to file a criminal complaint, leading to the closure of the police file. However, the head of the airport immigration office noted that cooperation with the police was aimed at maintaining public order, leading to the decision to deport the tourist and impose a ten-year entry ban.
