Audi Sends Workers to German Defense Sector Amid Automotive Restructuring
Audi is sending employees to German defense contractors for up to two years to prevent layoffs amid restructuring, with several partner firms linked to Israeli defense companies.
Audi is following Volkswagen's lead by sending employees to Germany's defense sector for periods of up to two years amid restructuring and declining car sales.
Defense Partnerships with Israeli Firms
According to reports from Germany, Audi workers at the Ingolstadt plant can volunteer for external placement at defense contractors such as Airbus, MBDA, DIEHL, and KNDS. Notably, these defense companies maintain ties with Israeli firms:
-
KNDS, which produces tanks and artillery systems, announced a partnership with Israel's Elbit Systems.
-
DIEHL formed a strategic partnership with Elbit Systems in June for weapons development.
-
MBDA partnered with Israel Aerospace Industries' ELTA Systems in 2023 for air defense development.
Job Security and Restructuring
Employees seconded to defense manufacturers will continue receiving their salaries from Audi and can return to their automotive roles after two years. Automotive News reports that most participating staff will be project managers and quality control specialists. Audi stated the initiative aims to prevent layoffs as the Volkswagen group implements aggressive cost-cutting measures due to falling sales in the Chinese market. Meanwhile, Germany's defense sector is experiencing significant growth driven by security threats from Russia.
