If you needed to edit an audio file over the past few decades, you likely found yourself installing Audacity. The veteran audio editing software has continued to deliver results since the Y2K era, but its design and features remained stuck right around that time. Now, the company has unveiled version 4, bringing advanced editing capabilities, new features, and even, as you might guess, a dark mode. And yes, it remains entirely free.
Transforming into a Powerful Tool
Over the weekend, Audacity released version 4 of the application (yes, only four major versions in 26 years), packed with a long list of interface upgrades that transform it from a sometimes clunky free tool into a multi-track audio editing beast. The massive upgrade starts with a cleaner interface, including project handling similar to any other digital audio workstation (DAW), alongside the first-ever addition of a dark mode for those who prefer it.
Under the hood lie endless improvements to the editing interface, beginning with a long-awaited non-destructive editing workflow.
Advanced Editing and Real-Time Monitoring
This means that even if you cut a part of a specific segment during editing and later changed your mind, you can extend that same section back and restore the deleted portion. In addition, the interface will no longer block you when attempting to paste a clip due to insufficient free space. It now introduces overlapping clips, allowing you to edit and move them to any point on the timeline — including multiple selection and grouping several clips into a single Group.
For example, you can select multiple voiceover segments and move them all simultaneously 2 seconds forward, or delete and extend one section while its entire group adjusts accordingly. The Trim feature has also become much more intuitive: simply press Shift and click with the mouse on a specific clip to cut it at that exact point. For multiple cuts, holding down Shift while clicking across various segments executes a rapid slice.
Peak Monitoring and Custom Workspaces
Suffering from clipping in your audio segments? The software has now added a dedicated indicator for every track showing in real time whether the audio level in the clip threatens listeners' ears. This new indicator also appears when recording directly into the software, helping manage out-of-control volume levels on the fly.
To better track different segments, the Looping interface has also been upgraded, making it easy to adjust and set loops to ensure they sit correctly. By the way, you can also export this loop directly rather than exporting the entire audio file.
Audio editors will particularly appreciate the new Workspaces feature. It allows the creation of customized audio editing interfaces for various use cases — ranging from podcast editing and basic tasks to music production. Each workspace can feature tailored buttons for your specific needs without requiring screen reconfiguration upon every launch.
Note that if you wish to try the new version 4, it comes with a heavy and unnecessary installer, but based on our experience, it can simply be discarded once the application installation is complete.
