Ashkelon Court Extends Remand for Two Suspects in Gang-Related Murder Attempt
The Magistrate's Court in Ashkelon has extended the remand of two residents of Kiryat Malachi, aged 21 and 41, who are suspected of involvement in an attempted murder using an explosive device. The incident is reportedly linked to ongoing turf wars between criminal organizations and gangs in Israel's southern region.
According to police representatives, the suspects activated an explosive material in an attempt to assassinate a rival gang member, though the target survived the blast. During the remand extension hearings, investigators noted that the suspects are cooperating only partially with authorities, remaining silent when questioned about critical aspects of the case.
Legal Arguments and Judicial Decisions
Attorney Michael Buskila, representing one of the suspects, questioned the specific role attributed to his client and argued against the lengthy detention request.
"There is no justification to request a ten-day extension based on vague suspicions. He does not even know what is specifically attributed to him," Buskila argued during the hearing.
Senior Police Officer Gil Tal presented the court with transcripts and evidence establishing a reasonable suspicion that the suspects engaged in conspiracy, weapons trafficking, and attempted murder within a criminal organization.
Presiding Judge Noga Shmueli-Mayer reviewed the investigation files and agreed that a reasonable suspicion exists, citing the severity of the offenses, the suspects' potential to obstruct justice, and their prior criminal records involving similar offenses. The court ultimately ordered a four-day extension of the remand to allow police investigators to advance the case and locate additional accomplices.
