The Argentine government has announced a new initiative allowing wealthy foreign nationals to obtain Argentine citizenship in exchange for substantial investments in the country. According to a report by The New York Times, this move forms part of President Javier Milei's broader efforts to attract foreign capital and inject much-needed US dollars into the domestic economy.

The "Golden Passport" Framework

Under the newly unveiled program, applicants can choose between a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 to the Argentine Treasury or the purchase of $800,000 in government bonds. Successful applicants will be granted citizenship, providing them with a passport that allows visa-free entry to over 140 countries worldwide.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo presented the program during a conference in Paris, highlighting that Argentine passport holders enjoy visa-free access to the European Union, Russia, and China, alongside the right to reside and work across South America under regional agreements.

International Context and Scrutiny

Argentina's program is relatively unique in its scope. While numerous nations offer residency through investment, only about ten countries currently operate schemes granting immediate full citizenship for capital. Among G20 member states, Turkey remains the only other country operating a comparable program.

"Applicants will not be required to reside in Argentina for any specific period as a condition for obtaining citizenship, though all requests will undergo strict vetting procedures."

Critics argue that such schemes commodify citizenship, and both the United States and the European Union have increased pressure on nations to scale back these pathways due to security and tax evasion concerns. Nonetheless, experts suggest Argentina's strong passport utility could attract significant international interest, particularly from Americans seeking backup citizenship options amid political and economic uncertainty.
