A junior architect at a planning firm in the first years after graduating and before obtaining a license typically earns between 12,000 and 16,000 NIS gross per month. This exceeds the minimum wage, which has stood at 6,443.85 NIS per month and 35.40 NIS per hour since April, and aligns closely with the average wage for salaried positions, which fluctuates this year between 14,000 and 15,000 NIS. The declared average for the position, around 14,700 NIS, is lower than the reality for registered professionals because it blends in numerous juniors prior to licensure.

The Licensure Milestone and Career Progression

Registration is what truly moves the paycheck. Following registration in the architects' registry and with several years of experience, salaries range from 17,000 to 22,000 NIS. After more than five years, a firm partner or an architect with an independent portfolio reaches 22,000 to 35,000 NIS, and sometimes more when handling a large residential project or public tender. The office, city, and scope of responsibility matter more than the degree on the wall.

Without an internship period followed by examinations and registration in the registry, signing off on plans and submitting them to the committee remains with the registered architect. In many offices, junior staff handle drafting, renderings, and details, while the registered architect signs off. This explains the wage gap that opens between the two even when sharing the same room.

Training Path and Comparison with the United States

The full training track spans five years for an architecture degree, followed by an internship of at least three years in a registered office, licensing exams, and registration in the Architects and Engineers Registry. Demand in Israel relies on residential construction and urban renewal.

In the United States, the median salary for architects stood at 99,280 USD per year as of May 2025, or 47.73 USD per hour. The bottom decile earns less than 62,300 USD, while the top decile exceeds 161,420 USD. Government employment pays the highest at 115,920 USD, compared to 98,440 USD in private planning offices.
