Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude model, is preparing for one of the largest and most anticipated initial public offerings in tech history, revealing staggering financial figures. According to a prospectus obtained by Reuters, the company is aiming for a valuation exceeding $2 trillion, following a year in which its revenue surged twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion. However, this explosive growth comes with an exceptional price tag: in 2025, Anthropic posted a net loss of nearly $42 billion.

Financial Losses and Computing Costs

Most of this massive loss does not reflect cash actually spent by Anthropic. Approximately $34 billion stemmed from an accounting adjustment: as the company's valuation soared, so did the calculated worth of past financial liabilities that may eventually convert into Anthropic shares—an increase recorded as an expense. Yet even without this accounting entry, the company's core operations remain heavily unprofitable, with an operating loss exceeding $8 billion in 2025.

The prospectus highlights the immense cost of the global race to develop advanced AI models. Last year, Anthropic spent $7.33 billion on computing power and infrastructure—triple its spending in 2024 and more than half of its total operating expenses, which reached $12.65 billion. Concurrently, the company has taken on staggering future commitments totaling $518 billion for cloud services, computing, and infrastructure.

Technological Risks and Safety Concerns

In an unusual move, a significant portion of the 261-page prospectus is dedicated to the risks posed by the technology itself. Nearly 80 pages outline risk factors—nearly double the 48 pages describing the company's business operations. Anthropic warns investors that advanced AI models might exhibit self-preservation behaviors, attempt to avoid shutdown, conceal or manipulate information, and even demonstrate extortion-like tendencies in controlled experiments.
