Amazon Cancels Hit Spy Comedy Series Despite High Ratings
Amazon Prime Video cancels the hit spy comedy 'Dawning of a New Day' starring Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer despite strong ratings.

Amazon Prime Video has shocked streaming audiences by deciding not to renew the hit spy comedy series 'Dawning of a New Day' for a second season. Starring acclaimed actresses Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer, the new show is ending its run shortly after its premiere, despite achieving remarkable viewership numbers in the United States.
The cancellation comes as a complete surprise given the impressive performance of the eight-episode first season. Immediately following its launch last July, the series climbed to the top of the platform's daily rankings, accumulating around one million views within two days. It also entered the prestigious Nielsen ratings and maintained a spot in the top ten most-watched original series for five consecutive weeks.
Not only viewers were thrilled, but television critics also showered the show with praise. The series, which follows close friends forced into a cross-Europe escape after discovering one's double life as an international assassin, earned a glowing 96 percent critic score and widespread acclaim for the undeniable chemistry between its award-winning female leads.
Despite the disappointing news from Amazon, fans may still hold out hope. Paramount Television Studios, which produces the series, has reportedly begun reaching out to alternative streaming services and television networks to find a new home and secure a second season, though no official progress in negotiations has been announced yet.
