Airbnb has updated its regulations to limit what hosts can demand from guests, specifically regarding cleaning tasks and property rules. According to the new rules, hosts can set up to seven standardized behavior rules and add reasonable extra requests, but they can no longer require guests who pay cleaning fees to strip beds, wash dishes, or take out the trash.

New Policy Details

The updated guidelines will apply to all bookings made from November 20. House rules help guests understand expectations, but the platform noted that previous requirements could be confusing or excessive. The company stated to the BBC that the redesign ensures rules remain clear and without surprise fees or burdens.

"We redesigned house rules to be easier to understand, alongside a new policy that keeps demands reasonable and without surprises," Airbnb representatives stated.

Restrictions and Exceptions

Under the new framework, hosts are strictly prohibited from asking guests to complete tasks that require significant effort or time typically handled by professional cleaners. However, exceptions may apply under specific circumstances, such as water conservation rules during drought periods. If a host's request violates platform regulations, it will be automatically blocked, though appeals are permitted.
