Exposing AI-Driven Influence Operations and Disinformation Campaigns in Israel
Expert Rodrigo Gonzalez warns about AI-driven disinformation campaigns ahead of Israel's elections, offering strategies to detect bot behavior and analyze online manipulation.

As Israel approaches the upcoming elections, digital manipulation and coordinated disinformation campaigns have emerged as a central concern. Rodrigo Gonzalez, one of Israel's early reality TV stars turned digital influence and campaign expert, recently shared critical insights on how to identify and counter artificial intelligence-driven interference.
Identifying AI-Driven Influence Operations
Gonzalez emphasizes that current technology is so sophisticated that determining whether a specific comment was written by a human or an artificial intelligence (AI) is exceedingly difficult. However, the key to detection lies in broader behavioral patterns.
If you see a comment repeating itself in timing, pace, and volume across multiple locations related to the same narrative, that is where we understand there is something happening behind the scenes, Gonzalez explains.
Detectability varies significantly across platforms. Visual networks like Instagram and TikTok, which rely heavily on geo-location and video, make identity verification easier thanks to blue badge verification mechanisms. Conversely, text-heavy networks like Discord and Reddit present a much greater challenge. Platforms such as X, formerly Twitter, allow users to purchase a blue checkmark without rigorous identity verification, necessitating deep behavioral analysis—including timing, volume, punctuation, and syntax—to distinguish AI bots from human users.
Case Studies in Global Disinformation
Influence campaigns are meticulously planned operations rather than spontaneous occurrences. Gonzalez points to recent statements by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who alleged a mysterious conspiracy between Israel and Morocco during the Ceuta events. Immediately following the claim, coordinated influencers amplified the message, synchronized hashtags flooded the network, and recycled historical images resurfaced. These processes are deliberately engineered technological campaigns.
Another prominent example involves an incident concerning a Flydubai flight. Politically motivated, Arabic-speaking influencers disseminated targeted terminology on a massive scale. Journalists subsequently began interviewing individuals who were not present at the event but served a specific narrative. Mainstream media outlets then echoed these headlines, eventually leading ordinary citizens to propagate the false information.
The AI Revolution and Defense Strategies
The advent of artificial intelligence has drastically accelerated the deployment of disinformation. While massive influence operations traditionally required six months to a year of preparation, AI capabilities have compressed this timeline to a month or a quarter for a full-scale narrative rollout. Despite these challenges, tracing the ultimate perpetrators of such campaigns remains virtually impossible, leaving financial disruption as one of the few deterrents.
To avoid falling victim to digital manipulation, Gonzalez advises analyzing user profiles for authentic human behavior. Furthermore, he warns against relying on AI tools for fact-checking: do not ask ChatGPT whether something is true or false, as models can be poisoned. The most critical defense is maintaining healthy human skepticism, conducting independent research, and questioning the information presented.
