Shimon Chernuha

Beitar Jerusalem football club announced on Wednesday the passing of Shimon Chernuha, one of the club's greatest players and most iconic symbols, who died at the age of 78. Born in 1948 to Holocaust survivors, Chernuha moved to Israel as an infant and rose through the Beitar youth ranks to join the senior team at just 15.

The former defender, who played most of his career for the capital's team and also for Maccabi Netanya — with whom he won a championship — passed away at the age of 78. The club paid tribute: "Today Beitar lost a symbol."
