A daring art heist is shaking Italy: four works by Renaissance artist Antonello da Messina were stolen over the weekend from the Regional Museum in Messina, Sicily. Italian police have opened an investigation, with authorities exploring potential mafia involvement, as reported by Reuters.

Three wooden panels from the 'Polittico di San Gregorio' by Antonello da Messina were stolen from a museum in Sicily. Security footage captured the intruders breaking in with flashlights. A local official stated that the theft was likely commissioned.

The Carabinieri Art Squad located the three works by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse in an apartment in Parma, about five months after they were stolen. A pickaxe and a fire extinguisher left at the scene, from which serial numbers had been removed, led investigators to the suspected gang.

Following a report in ynet and Yedioth Ahronoth regarding a stolen painting by artist Yosef Bau, the work has been returned to his family. A friend of the painter purchased it at an auction he happened to attend.
