Polish-American Community Outraged Over New York Mayor's Snub

The list of ethnic communities clashing with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani continues to grow. The latest friction involves the Polish-American community, following the mayor's decision to skip the historic Pulaski Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and instead attempt to merge Polish heritage celebrations into a generic Eastern European event.

Most Polish-Americans define themselves as Central European and strongly reject the "Eastern European" label due to its historical association with Soviet communism and the Warsaw Pact. Compounding the issue, the administration canceled the traditional annual breakfast at Gracie Mansion honoring Polish heritage, replacing it with a generalized reception scheduled for October 22.

"To lump Poles, Ukrainians, and Russians together shows historical ignorance and deep disrespect," said Grzegorz Fritz, a prominent community activist and businessman in New York.

A Pattern of Skipping Traditional Parades

Mamdani, New York's first Muslim mayor, has developed a pattern of skipping certain heritage parades since taking office in January. He has previously faced sharp criticism from Italian, German-American, and Jewish communities for missing events like the Columbus, Steuben, and Israel Day parades.

At the same time, the mayor has actively participated in marches for Pakistani, Sikh, Indo-Caribbean, and African-American communities, alongside the traditional St. Patrick's Day and Greek Independence Day parades. Responding to the backlash, the mayor's office stated that Mamdani deeply values the contributions of Polish-Americans across all city boroughs and looks forward to hosting them at Gracie Mansion.
