Yonathan Kapitolnik finished this evening, Friday, in fifth place in the high jump final at the European Athletics Championships, held in Birmingham, England. The Israeli jumper cleared a height of 2.23 meters on his second attempt, just as he did in the semi-final, equaling his result of the year, but failed three times when the bar was raised to 2.27 meters and exited the competition. He shared fifth place in his first European Championship final with two other jumpers.
Gianmarco Tamberi, the Olympic champion from Tokyo, won gold and placed Italy at the top of the championship's medal table. The 34-year-old jumper equaled his season best with 2.32 meters and was joined on the podium by his 20-year-old successor Matteo Cioli, who also brought Italy a bronze with 2.27 meters. The Ukrainian Oleh Doroshchuk finished second with 2.30 meters and won the silver medal.
23-year-old Kapitolnik holds a personal best of 2.31 meters, set in January 2025. In the past, he was crowned European champion and world champion under the age of 20. At the European Championship for adults two years ago, Kapitolnik finished in 12th place, suffered an injury, and failed to achieve the qualification criteria for Paris.
