Kumu Leader Yonatan Shamriz Decides Against Running in Knesset Elections

Yonatan Shamriz, the leader of the "Kumu" movement and one of the key organizers of the October 7 families' national memorial ceremony, has announced that he will not run for the Knesset in the upcoming elections. Shamriz, whose brother Alon Shamriz was tragically shot and killed in error by IDF forces in Shejaiya while in captivity, stated that he made the decision with a heavy but whole heart.

Shamriz explained his decision in a public statement:

"I will not run for the Knesset, in any list, whether existing or independent. I make this decision with a heavy but whole heart. In recent months, I decided to enter politics, but I realized the time is not yet ripe. I received many offers from many people who care deeply about the State of Israel, but I felt there was no place where I was truly at peace. I feel I carry a great deal of responsibility on my shoulders to make a voice heard for many people who cannot speak."

Political Ambitions and Internal Polls

Shamriz had initially decided to enter politics in November of last year. He considered establishing a new political party to represent a "new generation" that decided to rise up and take responsibility for the country. He had gathered public figures, activists from across Israel, and a professional advisory team to support his campaign. According to Shamriz, internal polls he conducted consistently showed his potential party crossing the electoral threshold.

Personal Tragedy and the October 7 Legacy

His political drive was deeply rooted in personal tragedy. During the national memorial ceremony organized by the families of October 7, Shamriz shared his harrowing experience from the Hamas massacre:

"On this day two years ago, I sat in the safe room with my pregnant wife and my daughter who was celebrating her second birthday. In one hand I held the door handle, and in the other, a knife—both to cut the cake and to defend ourselves. I received a message from my brother Ido, who was fighting dozens of terrorists and saw our best friends killed. A few hours later, my younger brother Alon wrote to me that terrorists had entered his apartment. I managed to write that I loved him—and we haven't spoken since. Already there, in the safe room, I promised myself: we will rise."

Alon Shamriz was later taken hostage to Gaza and was accidentally killed by IDF fire in December 2023 alongside two other hostages in Shejaiya. Despite stepping back from the current electoral race, Yonatan Shamriz emphasized his ongoing commitment to public advocacy through the "Kumu" movement.
