Pink Crosswalk Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Sparks Clash in Yeruham
A pink crosswalk initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Yeruham sparked a dispute between the municipality and opposition over police approval and pedestrian safety.

A municipal initiative to paint three pedestrian crossings pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month has sparked a political clash in Yeruham between the coalition and the opposition. Opposition members claim the move was carried out without police approval and could endanger children and pedestrians.
The dispute began after the municipality decided to paint three crosswalks near local health clinics in pink. While the coalition promotes the initiative to encourage early detection, opposition members raised concerns regarding safety approvals and pedestrian well-being.
Municipal Response and Police Approval
The municipality defended the project, stating that it involves only three crosswalks for a limited duration of one month, similar to initiatives in other cities across the country.
According to the municipality, opposition members arrived at the site and disrupted workers. After a discussion between local council head Nili Aharon and the police, workers were authorized to continue. The following day, opposition member Shelly Suissa reportedly asked the legal advisor to remove the paint.
Opposition Concerns Over Safety
Council member Ilan Elmakies argued that when he arrived at the scene, the work was being conducted without prior approval from the Israel Police. He questioned whether infrastructure adjustments for traffic regulation could be made without proper authorization.
"God forbid, a young child sees pink color and thinks it's a game rather than a crosswalk. Are there not enough tragedies in the State of Israel?" Elmakies said.
At the same time, Elmakies emphasized that he fully supports breast cancer awareness and was even willing to donate 400 pink balloons for an educational campaign. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between local authorities and the opposition regarding compliance with safety and legal requirements.
