A new survey by Hubstaff reveals that 55% of full-time desk workers in the US report telling their managers everything is fine while actually feeling overwhelmed, with 69% experiencing burnout over the past year. The study, which surveyed 1,068 employees aged 18 to 64, highlights a significant disconnect between staff and management regarding workplace wellbeing.

Among burned-out employees whose managers were aware of their struggles, 64% stated that nothing changed as a result. Furthermore, 54% of respondents believe employers see half or less of their actual workday, leading leadership to make critical staffing and technology investments based on incomplete data.

The Hidden Impact of Artificial Intelligence

While 79% of surveyed employees utilize artificial intelligence tools at work, with 76% saving at least an hour per week and 32% saving four hours or more, the technology has not necessarily reduced workloads. In fact, 46% of AI users report that expectations and workload have increased since adopting the tools, while only 5% note a decrease.

To compensate for AI adoption, 45% of users spend an hour or more per week fixing output generated by colleagues using AI. This invisible labor consumes valuable time without being reflected in standard performance metrics.

The Cost of Returning to the Office

Regarding hybrid and remote work policies, 67% of employees indicated that higher compensation would convince them to increase their office attendance frequency. This suggests that physical commuting is viewed primarily as a financial and time cost requiring direct compensation rather than a matter of corporate principle.
