Wall Street's securities industry continues to post extraordinary performance, with total sector profits reaching $45.9 billion in the first half of the year. This impressive figure puts Wall Street on a solid track toward breaking a new annual record.

According to a comprehensive report published on Tuesday by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, nearly every major operational area in the US capital market received a significant boost during the year. Key growth drivers include the recovery in deal-making activity, strong trading revenues driven by market volatility, steady credit growth, and a revival in the initial public offering (IPO) market.

This current surge follows directly on the heels of last year's trend, when securities industry profits reached a record $65.1 billion in 2025—a jump of over 30% compared to the previous year. Now, the data shows that the first half of 2026 recorded an additional surge of 51.3% compared to the same period last year.

The report notes that if companies maintain this pace of profitability for the remainder of the year, total profits for 2026 could exceed the $90 billion mark. This is an unprecedented achievement, with the report emphasizing that such a result would surpass even the peak levels recorded in 2009, even when adjusted for inflation.

Beyond the record figures of the companies themselves, Wall Street continues to cement its status as a critical pillar for the local economy in New York City. The industry provides financial backing and livelihoods for hundreds of thousands of workers while generating billions of dollars in tax revenue annually.

Data from the report indicates that the securities industry's contribution to the New York City budget for fiscal year 2026 stood at least at $7.8 billion, reflecting a 15.8% increase compared to its contribution last year.
