Luxury Around-the-World Cruise Suspended in Cambodia Due to Soaring Fuel Costs
Luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has abruptly ended its around-the-world voyage in Cambodia after surging fuel costs linked to the conflict involving Iran made the expedition financially unsustainable.

The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has abruptly suspended its around-the-world voyage, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded in Cambodia. The American-operated vessel halted its journey in the port of Sihanoukville after soaring fuel costs, exacerbated by the conflict involving Iran, rendered the ambitious multi-year expedition financially unsustainable.
Financial Pressures and Surging Fuel Costs
The ship departed Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 on a planned three-and-a-half-year voyage spanning roughly 150 countries. Operating on a unique residential model where passengers purchased or rented cabins, the vessel carried 203 passengers from 15 countries alongside 156 crew members. Company founder Mikael Petterson told Bloomberg that monthly operational expenses surged by approximately 50 percent to reach three million dollars. Fuel costs per cabin skyrocketed from 1,800 dollars to 8,000 dollars in parts of Asia, prompting the company to demand additional financial contributions from residents.
Passenger Uncertainty and Future Outlook
The company announced it will spend the next 60 days restructuring and attempting to raise capital, though it warned success is not guaranteed. While local accommodation and transport in Cambodia are currently being funded, return flights are not covered. Despite the logistical nightmare and financial uncertainty, many passengers remain hopeful that the voyage will eventually resume.
