Blood feud in Umm al-Fahm: Murder of Muhammad Mahamid solved

This evening (Wednesday) we published new details regarding the solving of the murder case of Muhammad Mahamid in Umm al-Fahm from January of this year. The investigation reveals that the victim was liquidated in a local bakery and that the motive was a blood feud and family honor.

In the Arab sector, a person does not have to be involved in the world of crime to become a target. Sometimes, a casual acquaintance or a family connection to a person involved in criminal activity is enough to seal the fate of an innocent person. This is exactly what happened on July 5 in Umm al-Fahm: two assassins lay in wait for Mahamid near the neighborhood bakery and acted the moment they spotted him — one of them got out of a vehicle, ran towards him, and fired at least nine bullets into his back. Mahamid was killed on the spot.

The motive behind the liquidation was a blood feud, after the deceased's brother was previously accused of murdering the wife of one of the defendants. Immediately after the shooting, a familiar pattern of attempting to erase evidence began: even before police forces arrived at the scene, the murder scene was thoroughly washed. Simultaneously, the defendants fled to an open area and set fire to the getaway vehicle, which contained their weapons and mobile phones.

Despite the attempts to cover their tracks, investigators from the Coastal District Central Unit (YAMAR Hof) and officers from the Umm al-Fahm station managed to piece together the evidentiary puzzle, collect intelligence and forensic findings, and bring about the arrest of the suspects. The development led to an unusual sight: members of Mahamid's family arrived at the police station to personally thank the investigators for solving the case and closing the circle.

This week, the Haifa District Attorney's Office filed a very serious indictment against those involved. The charges include premeditated murder under aggravating circumstances, weapons offenses, intentional aggravated assault, arson, destruction of evidence, obstruction of justice, alteration of vehicle identity, and malicious damage. Along with the indictment, a request was filed to hold the defendants in custody until the end of legal proceedings.

Solving the case comes against the backdrop of a change presented by the police regarding enforcement in the Arab sector, which is reflected in an increase in the number of cases maturing into indictments and arrest requests. In recent weeks, there has even been a decrease in the number of murders in Arab society: from 28 murdered in June, to 11 in July, and six additional murders in the first 12 days of August.

However, the overall situation remains complex: Muhammad Mahamid is one of 152 people murdered since the beginning of the year in Arab society — a figure that remains similar to the corresponding period last year. Now it remains to be seen whether the localized decrease of the last few weeks will become a sustained trend.
