Democrats Score Major US Midterm Upsets in Key Republican Strongholds
Democratic candidates scored dramatic victories in the US midterms, flipping key Republican strongholds in Texas, Ohio, and the Carolinas, while Georgia elected its first Black female governor.

Democratic candidates scored sweeping victories in the US midterm elections, flipping key Republican strongholds and dealing a major political blow to President Donald Trump's administration. According to election reports, the most dramatic upsets for Senate seats occurred in Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina, defying decades of conservative dominance.
The biggest upset of the night unfolded in Texas, where Democrats had not won a statewide election since 1998. Democratic candidate James Talarico, a state lawmaker who emerged as a national fundraising phenomenon, defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who enjoyed the endorsement of President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, in South Carolina, Democratic candidate Annie Andrews unseated incumbent Senator Darlene Graham.
Historic Victories and Gubernatorial Races
History was also made in Georgia, where former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, 56, was elected governor. Bottoms became the first Black woman in US history to be elected governor and the first Democrat to win the Georgia governorship since 1998. She defeated Republican candidate Rick Jackson, a billionaire entrepreneur who poured over 100 million dollars of his own money into the campaign.
Democratic campaigns nationwide focused their messaging on sharp criticism of President Donald Trump, capitalizing on public frustration over the cost of living, inflation, soaring fuel prices, healthcare access challenges, and the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Bottoms also placed a central emphasis on protecting voting rights and minority representation following Supreme Court rulings that weakened the Voting Rights Act.
Trump Responds to Midterm Setbacks
Despite the substantial setbacks, President Donald Trump stated in an interview that he is fully prepared to accept the election results and looks forward to working with Democrats to reach bipartisan understandings. During the night, Trump posted on social media, "I was not on the ballot, and had I been – we would have won in a landslide!"
Vote counting in several additional races across the United States remains ongoing, while Republicans defended seats in closely watched contests, including Florida where Senator Ashley Moody secured victory.
