The United States will permit a high-level Iranian delegation to attend the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, but will impose strict travel and purchasing restrictions on its members. According to the U.S. State Department, entry is granted in accordance with Washington's obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters.
Members of the Iranian delegation will face limitations on their movement during their stay in the United States. Additionally, they will be prohibited from purchasing luxury goods and certain other items, reflecting longstanding U.S. policy against the regime in Tehran.
The State Department noted that this year's delegation will be smaller than the one that attended last year's high-level debates. The decision comes ahead of the UN gathering, on the sidelines of which U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Gulf leaders to discuss regional security and steps regarding Iran.
These restrictions follow a similar precedent set last year, when Washington severely curtailed the movements of Iranian officials in New York. The 81st UN General Assembly is set to open next week, with tensions between Washington and Tehran expected to dominate the diplomatic agenda.
