US States Declare Emergency as Hurricane Isaias Approaches Gulf Coast
Three US states declare emergencies as Hurricane Isaias strengthens to Category 2, threatening Florida, Alabama, and Georgia with severe winds and flooding.
Three US states—Florida, Alabama, and Georgia—have declared a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Isaias, which strengthened into a Category 2 storm in the Gulf of Mexico. Thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate as authorities brace for destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and widespread flooding along the US coast.
Storm Track and Intensification
According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm intensified from a Category 1 to a Category 2 hurricane, packing sustained winds of approximately 169 km/h while moving north-northeast. Forecasters warn that Isaias could strengthen further into a major Category 3 hurricane before weakening slightly prior to landfall.
"If you are in the Florida Panhandle, assume you will lose power. Prepare for a power outage. That is likely what will happen with a hurricane-force storm," warned Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during a press briefing.
Emergency Measures and Energy Sector
Governors Ron DeSantis of Florida, Kay Ivey of Alabama, and Brian Kemp of Georgia declared states of emergency. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued in parts of Alabama and Florida, while schools and universities canceled classes through the end of the week. Energy companies including Shell and Chevron began shutting down production and evacuating non-essential personnel from offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
