IDF Deserter Taunts Israeli Police in Uman Over Extradition in Viral Video
A viral TikTok video shows a self-identified IDF deserter approaching Israeli police in Uman, Ukraine, to ask about extradition. Police, stationed for civil duties without arrest powers abroad, ignored the provocation.
A video clip distributed on TikTok by the channel "Hapargod" has gone viral within hours, depicting a tense encounter in the heart of Uman, Ukraine. The footage shows a young ultra-Orthodox man, identifying himself as a deserter from mandatory military service in the IDF, voluntarily approaching Israeli police officers securing believers ahead of the Rosh Hashanah holiday and asking them: "Do you have a way to extradite me?".
"Look at this, the Israel Police, come see them, our police officers made it all the way to Ukraine," the young deserter said as he approached the officers. "Me and him are deserters, do you have a way to extradite us? Oh, you don't extradite deserters?".
The police officers, who are stationed at the location solely for civil policing duties at the request of the Ukrainian government and hold no administrative or military detention powers on Ukrainian soil, appeared caught in an awkward situation and chose not to be drawn into a provocation.
Every year ahead of the Jewish High Holidays, the Israel Police dispatches a special delegation of officers and commanders to Uman in close cooperation with local law enforcement authorities in Ukraine. The delegation's role focuses on assisting in public order maintenance, responding to Israeli citizens in distress, and mediating with the local police in criminal or medical incidents. However, from a legal and international standpoint, the Israeli officers do not operate under Israeli sovereignty. They possess no independent enforcement powers and are not authorized to arrest IDF deserters or take extradition measures without a formal legal process between the nations.
