Swiss banking giant UBS is considering structural options including relocating its headquarters or pursuing a merger if Switzerland implements stringent new banking regulations. The proposed rules stem from the 2023 collapse of Credit Suisse, with the Swiss parliament's lower house set to debate legislation already approved by the upper house.

According to sources familiar with the matter, an internal group at UBS is evaluating potential responses, which include identifying smaller US banks for acquisition or preparing for a potential buyout, though no active talks are underway. Additionally, reports indicate UBS has explored moving its headquarters to London or expanding its US presence following the acquisition of a US banking license in March.

Switzerland's proposed reforms would require UBS to significantly boost capital adequacy for its foreign subsidiaries, potentially locking up over 20 billion dollars in capital. UBS argues these demands are excessive and would impair its international competitiveness, although the bank maintains that staying in Switzerland holds substantial value.
