Turkey Denies Allegations of Covert Interference in Azerbaijan
Tensions between Turkey and Azerbaijan escalated after an Azerbaijani media report accused Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan of involvement in a covert destabilization plot.
Rising Tensions Between Turkey and Azerbaijan
Tensions between Turkey and Azerbaijan have escalated significantly following a controversial report published by the Azerbaijani news outlet Qafqazinfo, which is closely linked to the administration of President Ilham Aliyev. The article accused Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan of involvement in covert activities aimed at destabilizing the Azerbaijani regime.
According to the now-deleted report, Fidan allegedly held secret meetings during a visit to Baku with representatives of the GYF youth foundation and issued clandestine directives. The publication claimed the foundation is tied to Turkish intelligence and works to recruit agents of influence. Although the article was swiftly removed without an official explanation, it sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles.
Ankara's Sharp Denial
The Turkish Embassy in Baku issued an unusually harsh statement denouncing the allegations as complete fabrications. The embassy emphasized that Fidan met openly with legally operating organizations and dismissed the claims of interference as deliberate disinformation designed to damage bilateral relations.
The claims regarding plans for intervention in Azerbaijan's internal affairs, intelligence operations, and coup plots are intentional lies aimed at inciting the brotherly Azerbaijani people against Turkey, the embassy stated.
Background Factors and Regional Diplomacy
This diplomatic friction unfolds against a backdrop of broader regional complications. Recent disputes arose over hijab restrictions in Azerbaijani schools, which drew criticism from Turkish ruling party officials. Furthermore, ties involving Israel have added complexity to the situation, notably following the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog to Baku, which reportedly utilized a transit route through Turkish airspace without prior notification to Ankara.
Despite these mounting tensions, both nations maintain deep-rooted strategic ties, though the recent public spat highlights a growing undercurrent of mistrust between the two historical allies.
