US President Donald Trump has taken an extraordinary step against one of his prominent Republican allies, publicly sharing the personal cell phone number of Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton to pressure him into passing a bill that would establish permanent daylight saving time nationwide.

In an angry social media post, Trump attacked Cotton for delaying the "Sunshine Protection Act" in the Senate. "Everyone in Arkansas, Tom Cotton, who is a friend of mine, is holding up a very important bill," Trump wrote. "For some reason, Tom is stopping the bill, and in the Senate, that is very easy to do, it only takes one person!"

The Battle Over Permanent Daylight Saving Time

The legislation aims to abolish standard time in the United States, ending the twice-yearly ritual of changing clocks. The bill previously passed the House of Representatives by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of 308 to 117, a figure Trump highlighted in his public appeal. To strengthen his position, Trump cited support from professional and public organizations, including a letter from PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan.

Trump emphasized that golfers, tennis players, hunters, and especially farmers need the extra afternoon daylight. According to Trump, over 65 percent of people want more afternoon sunlight, and 100 percent do not want to change their clocks twice a year.

"Call Tom on his cell phone at 479-453-0533, and let him know that this will be a tremendous bipartisan victory," Trump wrote.

Opposition and Safety Concerns

While Trump and supporters of the bill argue for economic benefits and improved quality of life, opponents like Senator Cotton warn of the potential consequences. Cotton has previously voiced opposition, recalling the failed 1974 US experiment with permanent daylight saving time, which forced children to walk to school in total winter darkness and led to increased traffic accidents, prompting the law's swift repeal.

Despite the ideological resistance, Trump refused to give his ally a pass, concluding his post with a blunt demand: "Have the vote in the Senate, now!"
