Storm in the basketball world: Hapoel Jerusalem sues Hapoel Tel Aviv for millions
After four successful seasons in the capital, Khadeen Carrington's move to Tel Aviv reaches the arbitration institution. Jerusalem is demanding at least 2.3 million shekels as development fees, based on the Israel Basketball Association regulations.
The Khadeen Carrington affair continues to branch out and shake Israeli basketball: the move of the American-Israeli guard from Hapoel Jerusalem to Hapoel Tel Aviv last summer is crossing lines and heading straight to legal proceedings. The team from the capital filed an official arbitration claim today (Sunday) with the Israel Basketball Association's arbitration institution against the "reds" from Tel Aviv, in which it demands a huge sum of at least 2.3 million shekels.
The claimed amount is derived from Jerusalem's assertion that it is entitled to 20 percent of Carrington's gross salary for one season in his new uniform. This demand is subject to the presentation of the player's contract with Hapoel Tel Aviv and the actual amounts stated therein as submitted to the budget control.
The main argument of the Jerusalemites is based on the Israel Basketball Association's championship regulations, which state that a team is entitled to receive development or transfer fees for a player who played for it for at least three consecutive seasons in the Super League — a criterion that Carrington meets after four consecutive years in the capital.
Carrington (30, 1.93 meters), who became a naturalized citizen and currently plays for the Israel national team, was one of the cornerstones of Jerusalem and during his time at the club won the State Cup twice, the Winner Cup twice, and the Israeli Super Cup once. In the regular league season, he averaged 13.2 points per game, alongside 14.8 points on average in the EuroCup.
Tel Aviv's shining acquisition, who brings with him a rich European resume from stops like Monaco, Betis, and Ludwigsburg, will now be at the center of a heated financial confrontation between the two clubs, as the ball passes to the arbitrator's decision. As recalled, about two weeks ago it was published that Hapoel Jerusalem had approached Hapoel Tel Aviv and Ofer Yannai with a demand to receive development fees following Carrington's move.
