Travelers at the international airport in Skiathos, Greece, are increasingly risking severe injuries from jet blasts while attempting to capture close-up photos and videos of departing aircraft. In August alone, two vacationers were injured while watching takeoffs: a woman sustained a head injury, and another tourist broke his arm.

Skiathos features one of the shortest runways in Europe, with easy public access to the perimeter fence. Last summer, a tourist on the island was blown into the sea by the jet blast of an easyJet aircraft. In recent years, a growing number of tourists have sought out close encounters with planes at airports worldwide, prompting experts to warn that adrenaline-seeking behavior can lead to severe injury.

Safety Measures and Official Warnings

To mitigate risks, experts recommend establishing clearly defined safety zones, blast barriers, restricted vehicle paths, and strict communication protocols between air traffic control and ground crews. Despite these dangers, local municipal officials maintain differing perspectives on public viewing areas.

We strongly recommend visitors to Skiathos stay away from the jet blast and avoid standing behind aircraft during takeoff. This is not the highlight of the Skiathos airport experience.

Conversely, the mayor of Skiathos, Thodoris Tzoumas, has defended the public's right to film from public spaces, arguing that the practice does not constitute an inherent danger.

Global Hotspots for Jet Blast Risks

Another world-famous hotspot is the airport on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten, where the runway is notoriously close to the sea due to geographic constraints. Last year, a group of tourists was blown into the water while attempting to snap the perfect photo behind a departing airliner. Footage widely shared on social media platforms, including a viral video by the TikTok account airlines360, frequently highlights the sheer force and unpredictability of jet blasts.

Jet blast is a powerful stream of high-velocity air expelled from the rear of a jet engine, particularly pronounced during takeoff preparations or high-power engine runs. While essential for propulsion, this intense thrust poses severe hazards to individuals, vehicles, and equipment operating near runways and taxiways.
